I think we can all agree that the use of Artificial Intelligence is already a cornerstone of daily life, and it’s undeniably important. Remember last year, when OpenAI’s servers went down for a short time? Panic spread everywhere online. Suddenly, people realized they’d forgotten how to do the most basic tasks at work, writing an email seemed harder than climbing Everest.
While governments around the world are trying to play catch-up with regulation, the pace of AI development moves so fast that crafting effective rules is like trying to catch a snowflake falling from the sky.
On the other hand, criminals and troublemakers seem to be taking advantage of regulators’ slow decision-making and divided opinions on the issue. Take March of last year: OpenAI introduced image generation for ChatGPT-4o and ChatGPT-4o mini on March 25. By March 31, the tool was available for free to all users. And almost immediately, people discovered it could be manipulated to create fake receipts and forge other documents.
In a true investigative spirit, a team of journalists decided to think like a criminal. Using only public information and free versions of these AI tools, they tested just how easy it would be for someone with basic knowledge to bypass the supposed safeguards.

Using a passport template as a test, they requested simple changes.

The result was a convincingly altered passport, complete with realistic image overlays and stamp placements.
Remarkably, all of this was done in minutes. No code. No Photoshop. No underground know-how.
This shocking revelation democratizes fraud for what we might call “zero-knowledge” threat actors. A person with no background in cybercrime can now execute sophisticated scams.

Think about what this means for fraud detection and prevention. The threat isn’t just how easy it is to create these fake documents, it’s how convincing they’ve become. AI can now mimic not only the look of official documents but also the texture of handwriting, the irregularities of ink, and the fine graphical details that make them appear authentic.
What’s even more alarming is the rapid development cycle. As AI platforms continue to improve and image generators become more advanced, the bar for producing believable forgeries will drop even further.
We’ve officially entered a new chapter in cybercrime, where generative AI tools empower zero-knowledge threat actors to commit high-quality fraud. Organizations must urgently update their fraud detection mechanisms not only for traditional phishing and malware but for this new wave of AI-driven document-based attacks.
